This is BIG, and a bit complex, but the this plan has multiple uses.

  • Expose the Basij and plain clothes police for possible  future prosecution under a new regime. The Basij force has been estimated at at least 100,000 strong. The more violent the actions of the Basij, the higher the risk of prosecution, Basij, if you do not want to be prosecuted, it would be best to retire from the force now.  Imported Basij Thugs from other countries should consider returning home soon, to avoid exposure.
  • Using the power of hundreds of people worldwide, assemble a database of images of the individuals beating and gunning down their fellow citizens in the streets of Iran.
  • Counter the current TV spots in Iran highlighting the protesters.  Those spots are  about intimidation, and word of this can be as well, intimidation of the Basij. Imagine you were Basij, and you were, like all of Iran wondering what the future holds for your Country. Now, Imagine possible prosecution if things change. How involved would you want to be?
  • Possibly make the Basij thugs think twice before shooting or beating our friends in Iran.
  • We need some serious talent here, Post this everywhere to get recruits, and re-tweet the link regularly!
  • Your comments and suggestions are always welcome here, this is a HUGE project.

There are several facets to the plan, and we need talented individuals for this to work!

Step One: We need links to any site that contains photos or videos of Basij, in active or passive repression.

This phase can be done by anyone, search YouTube, other video and Image sites for images, and get the links to us via comments or email. Iranian sites have used these images as propaganda since the start, as intimidation to the protesters, if you are capable of accessing and reading these Iranian sites, check them out thougoughly for the videos and images we need.

We need to know:

Where  (x square or ‘district’ ( if known)

When was the image taken

City     (tehran, or other if known)

Who     (guy on the left, to point out the Basij)

What    (commenting on women not wearing scaves, beating, shooting, whatever)

Then the link to the image or video.

The links will be posted on this site.

Will there be a website showing the faces of all these guys?
      — so all of Iran can go to the site and scan for faces they recognize
      — then go to the trial courts to testify against them

To all commentators: please get in touch with each other in a more secure method
to offer your help ie how to do the exact thing rather than just suggesting.
This is the only way forward getting rid of all these dirty animals. Wish you all
strenght and with the hope of witnessing the day iran is free of ISLAMIC FASCHISM.

Please search the links on this thread:

It is all in Dutch, but it is packed with useful links. For four weeks alrady this thread is alive with many dedicated people collecting information from Iran. Quite a few bloggers in The Netherlands support the people in Iran, although our politicians and newspapers are all totally ignoring the situation in Iran. History will judge them. Greetings and sucess!

Everyone should go to this site and ID the ones already pointed out as well:http://lordomid.blogspot.com/2009/07/blog-post_10.html
Basij are getting a lot of bad press from public, engagements broken, families blacklisting them and friends forsaking them. Keep up the good work!!

REPLY: Well, we are trying. Good to hear that our work is paying off!

Excellent idea and can be very effective if implemented correctly.
You’ll need some contacts in Iran for the exposure phase to be most effective.
There are large collections in different locations. These can be gotten easily enough. More order to the information going with the pictures/video as well as more information from the sources that provide them will increase the probability that the basiji can actually be identified and paid a visit to.
Even if they are not confronted face to face, knowing that a poster exists for them that is being posted and is being circulated on the internet can lead to serious thoughts of changes in occupation as well as residence.
    This is great cause.
    I’ll be back!

REPLY: We have initial inside Iran contacts, and are working on finalizing that relationship. This will be good, indeed.

Excellent initiative that you’re taking here. I have put up the pictures of a few members on my blog and if you can help me with their identification, I would appreciate it.

I’ve also put a link for your site. Let’s band together to intimidate these thugs.

    Go on proud iranian people!!!!!!

Agree with what progressief says, exactly what I was thinking as I read this post. What you need is a web framework that enables rapid application development – not a CMS. I know a number of people who /may/ be able to help, including myself, but in order for this to be successful a preliminary specification will need to be discussed (to ensure security and reliability of both the system AND the data being inputted into it).

Send photos and video as soon as you get them. Will blur protestors.

You might want to look into using an online service like Photobucket, too. It would allow anyone to upload photos, then you could move them into protected area (folder) when identities are verified. Tags can be added to facilitate searches…just a thought for an easy-to-use environment for everybody. I sure hope you can help!

“As we want this to be a growing, search friendly database, we are looking for advice on Open Source content management systems with specific capabilities under Linux.”

What you want is not a ‘database’. It is a web framework, which will facilitate you meeting those requirements. Two mature, open source and scalable solutions, both with very active user bases, spring to mind. Please look into “django” (http://www.djangoproject.com/) or “ruby on rails” (http://rubyonrails.org/).

These will even get a novice set up in a few days. I only have experience with django and I can assure you it makes tagging and image resizing very easy. You have a choice of database backends, such as MySQL or Postgresql. It is non-restrictive and scalable.

The same should go for RoR. I am sure you can get some developer support in either forum if you explain your mission.

Good luck, I am sympathetic of your cause.
